How Much Longer???

As a first point, I believe that Moshiach can come today, right now, and does not have to wait any longer. If I didn’t believe this, I would be considered a heretic.

However, between right now and when is the last possible moment that Moshiach will come?

In 2004, Rabbi Pinchas Winston gave a Shiur wherein he discusses the Resurrection of the Dead. He brought down from the Leshem, who it is my understanding was a great Kabbalist and the grandfather of the Posek of our generation, Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv, Z’’L, that the Resurrection of the Dead has to start at a minimum, 210 years before the year 6,000, which puts it at 5790. http://www.torah.org.il/learning/perceptions/5764/vaera.html

We are now in the year 5775. That means, if this calculation is correct, that the maximum amount of time before the righteous begin to rise out of the ground is 15 years.

And according to other rabbis I learned with, Moshiach must come before the Resurrection of the Dead. Thus, at the most, we have more than 15 years of history left to go.

I discussed this concept briefly with the Holminer Rebber, HaRav Sholom Yehuda Gross, and he said that it looks like after Shavuot, things will start moving very quickly.

I had another thought. There were 70 years between the destruction of the First Temple and the Second Temple. If we look at the founding of the State of Israel as ‘ground zero’, as the beginning of the reversal of the destruction of the Bet Hamikdash, then 70 years from the founding of the State of Israel is 3 more years. I do not have any sources for this analogy.

Another thought I had was Hashem gave us back the Western Wall in 1967. If we look at the receipt of the Western Wall as a reference point analogous to the 50 days between the Jews leaving Egypt and the receipt of the Torah at Har Sinai, and every day is a ‘year’, then this brings us to 2017, or 5777.

The numbers 5777 are also very interesting. The number ‘7’ represents completion, or Shabbat. The number 7 appearing 3 times in a row is a Chazakah…. It is also the winning numbers on a slot machine… sometimes the obvious is hidden in plain sight… I remember a movie “its a Mad Mad World” where everyone is looking for the “Big W”, where a treasure is buried. The “Big W” was formed by the intersection of various palm trees, and as in plain sight.

There is no question that the world is boiling right now. Things are going to start happening very quickly. The economic news mirrors 2008, and when this collapse happens, it will make 2008 look like a picnic.

Geopolitically, the world is a mess. Between Iran, Ukraine, North Korea, Yemen, and many other hot spots, it isn’t hard to imagine a single spark igniting a horrible conflagration.

Socially, the world is also falling apart. Marriage between members of the same gender is now accepted as ‘normal’ in the USA, and those that stand against this abomination are branded terrorists. Let’s not forget that the Gemara says that the final nail in the coffin in the generation of the flood is that it became permissible for man to make a contract to marry another man.

However, at the end of the day, G-d controls the world, and it is by his will alone that events happen. We only have the ability to choose to do good or not good, and to keep or break his commandments.

The point is not to just sit by to wait for things to happen. Our sages taught that in the final war of Gog and Magog, 1/3 of the people in the world will die, 1/3 will be sick, and 1/3 will live to see the Messianic era.

Now is the time for everyone to take stock of their own situation – where are we in life? We all need to make major teshuva, REAL teshuva, to affect not only our own individual outcomes, but the outcome of the world as a whole, for good.

With blessings, Shimon.
