The time is very close…. How much longer?

How Much Longer???

As a first point, I believe that Moshiach can come today, right now, and does not have to wait any longer. If I didn’t believe this, I would be considered a heretic.

However, between right now and when is the last possible moment that Moshiach will come?

In 2004, Rabbi Pinchas Winston gave a Shiur wherein he discusses the Resurrection of the Dead. He brought down from the Leshem, who it is my understanding was a great Kabbalist and the grandfather of the Posek of our generation, Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv, Z’’L, that the Resurrection of the Dead has to start at a minimum, 210 years before the year 6,000, which puts it at 5790.

We are now in the year 5775. That means, if this calculation is correct, that the maximum amount of time before the righteous begin to rise out of the ground is 15 years.

And according to other rabbis I learned with, Moshiach must come before the Resurrection of the Dead. Thus, at the most, we have more than 15 years of history left to go.

I discussed this concept briefly with the Holminer Rebber, HaRav Sholom Yehuda Gross, and he said that it looks like after Shavuot, things will start moving very quickly.

I had another thought. There were 70 years between the destruction of the First Temple and the Second Temple. If we look at the founding of the State of Israel as ‘ground zero’, as the beginning of the reversal of the destruction of the Bet Hamikdash, then 70 years from the founding of the State of Israel is 3 more years. I do not have any sources for this analogy.

Another thought I had was Hashem gave us back the Western Wall in 1967. If we look at the receipt of the Western Wall as a reference point analogous to the 50 days between the Jews leaving Egypt and the receipt of the Torah at Har Sinai, and every day is a ‘year’, then this brings us to 2017, or 5777.

The numbers 5777 are also very interesting. The number ‘7’ represents completion, or Shabbat. The number 7 appearing 3 times in a row is a Chazakah…. It is also the winning numbers on a slot machine… sometimes the obvious is hidden in plain sight… I remember a movie “its a Mad Mad World” where everyone is looking for the “Big W”, where a treasure is buried. The “Big W” was formed by the intersection of various palm trees, and as in plain sight.

There is no question that the world is boiling right now. Things are going to start happening very quickly. The economic news mirrors 2008, and when this collapse happens, it will make 2008 look like a picnic.

Geopolitically, the world is a mess. Between Iran, Ukraine, North Korea, Yemen, and many other hot spots, it isn’t hard to imagine a single spark igniting a horrible conflagration.

Socially, the world is also falling apart. Marriage between members of the same gender is now accepted as ‘normal’ in the USA, and those that stand against this abomination are branded terrorists. Let’s not forget that the Gemara says that the final nail in the coffin in the generation of the flood is that it became permissible for man to make a contract to marry another man.

However, at the end of the day, G-d controls the world, and it is by his will alone that events happen. We only have the ability to choose to do good or not good, and to keep or break his commandments.

The point is not to just sit by to wait for things to happen. Our sages taught that in the final war of Gog and Magog, 1/3 of the people in the world will die, 1/3 will be sick, and 1/3 will live to see the Messianic era.

Now is the time for everyone to take stock of their own situation – where are we in life? We all need to make major teshuva, REAL teshuva, to affect not only our own individual outcomes, but the outcome of the world as a whole, for good.

With blessings, Shimon.

13 Principles of Jewish Faith

Rabbi Yehuda Chayoun brings down from R. Chaim of Brisk:

“Based on Rambam, R. Chaim of Bris maintains that, in questions of faith, even an unintentional nonbeliever is an apikores. For belief entails knowledge of the thirteen principles, so anyone unfamiliar with even one of them is remiss in his faith and therefore a heretic. It makes no difference if his ignorance is unintentional or predicated on a mistake. The fact that he does not know this principle makes him a heretic.” [From “When Moshiach Comes, ch.1]

As such, it is incumbent on all Jews to both know these principles and to believe in them. The Aryeh Kaplan Anthology vol. I has a great explanation of the Thirteen Principles. These Thirteen Principles are noted below:

  1. I believe with perfect faith that God is the Creator and Ruler of all things. He alone has made, does make, and will make all things.
  2. I believe with perfect faith that God is one. There is no unity that is in any way like His. He alone is our God – He was, He is and He will be.
  3. I believe with perfect faith that God does not have a body. Physical concepts do not apply to Him. There is nothing that resembles Him at all.
  4. I believe with perfect faith that God is the first and last.
  5. I believe with perfect faith that it is only proper to pray to God. One may not pray to anyone or anything else.
  6. I believe with perfect faith that all the words of the prophets are true.
  7. I believe with perfect faith that the prophecy of Moses is absolutely true. He was the chief of all the prophets, both before and after him.
  8. I believe with perfect faith that the entire Torah that we now have is that which was given to Moses.
  9. I believe with perfect faith that this Torah will not be changed, and that there will never be another Torah given by God.
  10. I believe with perfect faith that God knows all of man’s deeds and thoughts. It is thus written (Psalm 33:15), “He has molded ever heart together, He understands what each one does.”
  11. I believe with perfect faith that God rewards those who keep his commandment, punishes those who transgress His commandments.
  12. I believe with perfect faith in the coming of the Messiah. No matter how long it takes, I await his coming every day.
  13. I believe with perfect faith that the dead will be brought back to life when God wills it to happen. Source: Aryeh Kaplan Anthology, Vol I

In the Zechus of strengthening both the knowing and believing in the Thirteen Principles, we should merit the complete redemption of the Jewish People immediately through the coming of our righteous redeemer.

As is written in the“Yalkut Shimoni”:

In the year King Moshiach is revealed, nations will be provoke one another; the king of Paras provokes an Arab king[…]all the nations of the world are distressed and panicking[…Hashem] says to Israel ‘don’t be afraid, all that I have done I did not do except for your sake—the time of your redemption has arrived[…]Moshiach stands on the roof of the Beis Hamikdash and announces to Israel—the time of your redemption has arrived.

“Black Swan” events over the past few weeks…

world on fire

Did we just have a ‘Black Swan’ news event over the past few week? A black swan event is defined as follows:”a theory or theory of black swan events is a metaphor that describes an event that comes as a surprise, has a major effect, and is often inappropriately rationalized after the fact with the benefit of hindsight.”

“On the 13th day of Nissan, Haman had the decree written up, and it was sent out to every province in its respective language. The decree said that all Jews, young, old, children and women, were to be exterminated on one day, the 13th of Adar, and their possessions were to be plundered. The edict was sent out immediately. Haman wanted this edict publicized right away, even though it was eleven months before the execution of the decree, because Haman feared that Achashverosh would change his mind. Once the decree was out, the fate of the Jews was sealed.”(Hat Tip Chaim S.)

And finally, unrelated to the above, an example as to why one should never gloat and count one’s chickens before they hatch.

7 year cycle before Moshiach comes…

A Baraita in Sanhedrin describes the seven-year cycle preceding Moshiach’s arrival 97a): “The Rabbis taught in a Baraisa: The seven-year cycle when the son of David will come: In the first year, this verse will be fulfilled: I will bring rain on one town, and on one town I will not bring rain. [i.e., there will be a sufficiency in some areas and famine in the others.] In the second, the arrows of amine will be sent forth i.e., there will be a limited famine in all areas. In the third year there will be a great famine; Men, Women, and Children will perish. [source: Schottenstein Edition Tractate Sanhedrin]

A recent report from NASA states:
“It will take about 11 trillion gallons of water (42 cubic kilometers) — around 1.5 times the maximum volume of the largest U.S. reservoir — to recover from California’s continuing drought, according to a new analysis of NASA satellite data.
The finding was part of a sobering update on the state’s drought made possible by space and airborne measurements and presented by NASA scientists Dec. 16 at the American Geophysical Union meeting in San Francisco. Such data are giving scientists an unprecedented ability to identify key features of droughts, data that can be used to inform water management decisions.”
And another report states that taps could go dry…
“Could California really run dry? “It often seems impossible to imagine, but tap water shortages are a distinct possibility if mitigation efforts aren’t embraced and droughts become more frequent and intense in the coming years,” meteorologist Steve Bowen of reinsurance firm Aon Benfield told USA Today.
California’s rainy season is drawing to a close — without the rain its residents had been waiting for. Though some climatologists hoped this year’s El Niño system would make a difference, the state remains horribly parched. The Sierra Nevada snowpack, which normally melts through the summer providing nearly a third of the state’s water, is at its second lowest point on record. “It looks like we are on our way to the worst snowpack in history,” Michael Anderson, the state climatologist, told The New York Times, noting that things look “pretty grim.”
So as the state braces for a fourth year of drought, state regulators on Tuesdayimposed new water restrictions, mostly aimed at reminding Californians of the degree of scarcity. For instance, as the AP reports: “Servers in bars, restaurants and cafeterias can’t bring out water with menus and silverware unless customers ask. … The rule is meant to raise conservation awareness more than save water.”The L.A. Times notes that regulators consider this latest round of actions “quite modest.” Some cities, like Los Angeles, already have local rules that are stricter than the new ones being issued by the state.” [end quote]
Is it any wonder that the State that leads the nation in deviant behavior is running dry? Even gentiles are forbidden certain behaviors by Hashem… What are 40 million people going to do when the taps go dry?
Let’s not forget there are hundreds of thousands of Jews living in California… time for those willing to abide by Hashem’s laws to come home….
